Four Leaf Studios at Comiket 91

This winter Comiket, 4LS will have a booth on day 2 (Friday, 30th December) and we’ll be in the West Hall, table ひ-07a. A new original work by weee, hir and Crud, Dreamer, will be for sale. It’s bilingual (English and Japanese).

In addition, we’re going to have a stock of last Comiket’s artbooks, Beauty and Strangeness (all ages) and The Soft Hour (R-18+) and a limited paperback stock of Crud's book, The Zemlya Conspiracy, (cover art by Doomfest) available.

In attendance, we’ll have Crud, weee, hir, Suriko, Raide, as well as some friends and guests. Not everyone will be at the booth the whole time, so if you’re thinking about stopping by please contact us on Twitter or similar!

And, as a special treat, weee will be having a booth of her own on Day 3 (Saturday the 31st of December), East Hall, table K-27b. She'll bring her new art collection, RKGK BOOK. VCR will be at the booth as well, and Crud be hanging around to help with the translation!

It’s nearly been 5 years since Katawa Shoujo was released, which also means nearly 10 years since I first got involved with the project. That’s pretty amazing to me; I’ve not stayed in the same company for more than 5.5 years, so this feels a little more like family than a job. And I have also realised that Comiket represents nearly my entire non-work social life for the year.

So, we're looking forward to seeing some of you at the battleground that is Comiket. If you’re going to be in Japan at that time it’s really worth stopping by, if only to see the madness with your own eyes. We’ll be waiting for you!

Katawa Shoujo in Italian!

art by weee
Nearly four full years since the release, an Italian translation of the full version of Katawa Shoujo has been released! Impressive tenacity, as with all the other translation projects. Most of the work was done by none other than KS's head editor and fact checker extraordinaire, Silentcook. This puts him at nearly 8 years of actively working on Katawa Shoujo, far more than the mere 3-5 years the rest of 4LS did.

You can download a patch to add Italian localization to Katawa Shoujo from this link.

Here's what Silentcook had to comment:
Fatto.

Katawa Shoujo 1.3.1 release and the end of support

Katawa Shoujo 1.3.1 is released! It contains several script fixes for the Japanese localization.

Download the release from our website or directly from these links:

Torrent: Windows | Mac OS X | Linux
DDL: Windows | Mac OS X | Linux

This is in all likelihood the final release of Katawa Shoujo ever.

This release also marks the end of official support for KS. From now on we won't guarantee technical or emotional support for Katawa Shoujo-related issues. Regardless, you can still contact 4LS at our email, social media, forums or IRC for any reason, as before.

In the absence of official support for translation projects, we've made an instruction set to facilitate releasing independent translations. 4LS won't guarantee to provide any kind of support to any translation project from this point forwards, but we wish any prospective or ongoing translation project the best of luck. See here for the instructions and the translation license.

Thanks to everyone who made all of this possible.

Katawa Shoujo Japanese translation released!

Katawa Shoujo 1.3 featuring the Japanese localization is now available! Three years and change after the original release, KS can be now read in the language of the image that originally inspired the birth of the Katawa Shoujo project. We'd like to thank and congratulate the translation team for their completion of the project, and hope you all enjoy the new language option for our stories.

Download the release from our website or directly from these links:

Torrent: Windows | Mac OS X | Linux
DDL: Windows | Mac OS X | Linux

As always, we greatly appreciate your help in seeding the torrent releases. 1.3 is a standalone release that completely replaces previous KS releases and it's the recommended version for new readers.

Don't forget that we're participating in Comitia 112 on the 5th of May. Please visit the translation team at booth こ29a and say hello! Hardcopies of Katawa Shoujo in dvd cases featuring weee's artwork can be bought at the event.

Here is a message from the translation team:
We would like to thank everyone who have been patiently waiting for the Japanese release for more than 3 years since the release of version 1.0. It was truly a long journey with many challenges for us the translation team as well. We're happy that we have succeeded in reaching the final goal. The Japanese translation and the release of Katawa Shoujo could not have been made without the tremendous support from dev folks in Four Leaf Studios, the members of JP translation team, among many other people. We would like to express our thanks for making this release possible.

Katawa Shoujo is a monumental game, which was made in English language, by a team of non-Japanese individuals, with a visual novel format which is very familiar to us Japanese. Despite the title's first hand impression, the stories in the game were very sincere, which received praise across the world. It is undoubtedly a memorable piece, or rather a phenomenon in the history of games (One evidence is that searching for "Katawa Shoujo" in youtube will show 63800 videos posted).

I myself was moved so much when I played this game, which was the reason I wanted to people in Japan to know more about KS. That was also the cause for me to translate it into Japanese.

As the Japanese Otaku culture spread around the world over the years, its influence has culminated into one masterpiece, and now it is being brought back into Japan. It's fascinating how things have come to a full circle, and I feel lucky that I could take a part in this. In a way, I felt it was a mission for me to complete the translation and make it public. That determination has kept me going till now.

Our team has given the best of our efforts into the translation. Please enjoy.

----

7 years since the release of Act1 in 2008, and 3 years since the full version in 2012. English visual novels were far more in the niche back then. However in the past year or two, we are seeing more and more English visual novels in Steam and other platforms. Perhaps Katawa Shoujo had its influence in paving the way for Visual Novels.

I'm hoping that the release of KS Japanese translation would increase interest in other novel games outside Japan, and perhaps their translation as well.

Katawa Shoujo 1.2.1 released

Due to a bug in the OS X version of Katawa Shoujo 1.2, we're releasing a new build. This is not a patch, but the entire game rebuilt to fix the error. The Windows and Linux versions will remain unchanged as the bug isn't present in them, and there's no need for any action (except maybe seeding the torrent) for Win/Linux users. OS X users should get the new release. Your saves and progression will remain as they are between 1.2 and 1.2.1.

You can get the 1.2.1 release from the Katawa Shoujo website or from these links:

Katawa Shoujo 1.2 released - Spanish localization added

Katawa Shoujo adds a new localization in a fresh update - Spanish! Two and a half years after the original release, another hardworking translation team has successfully completed their project of localizing the full visual novel. Let's hear some thoughts from the team:
Greetings,
We are the guys who translated Katawa Shoujo into Latin American Spanish, but you'll see the option as "International Spanish" within the game. We were given the chance to give the fans a message. Because of a lack of imagination, this'll be a history lesson.

The beginnings of this project were pretty shaky. In the days when the KS demo was the only thing that had been released to the public, a group of fans wanted to work a Spanish translation into the demo, though for whatever reason that didn't occur. Later in time, past mid 2011, one of us thought that it would probably be interesting to start the translation anew, see how things went from there. But 2012 rolled in and Katawa Shoujo v1.0 came with it, that meant the project would have to either be cancelled or reworked and extended to encompass the full game. For better or worse, the latter was chosen.
Up to that point, it was pretty much a one-man-show, making progress a very slow thing. That changed momentarily when a new member was added, yet it wasn't long before things came to a stop once again. Soon after, the project was left to die a very slow death.
As luck would have it, though, someone else appeared asking about this mess, wanting to help. With that new addition to the team, progress picked up again, then came the site, the forums, the IRC channel... Afterwards everything started taking proper form with new team members signing up and followers popping in. But even then nothing really went smoothly, during the lifetime of the project, some highs were reached as well as very deep lows, with many instances of people vanishing, leaving things unfinished at best. Nevertheless, to some of us it was too late to quit.

We are a group without a name, most without a past in the medium of visual novels, with no experience in translation, and probably without future projects. The goal was always to deliver a translation of the best quality we could offer. We are aware that the Spanish-speaking world is vast and varied, but we hope that most people find our work acceptable and enjoy the game for what it is.

After struggling for over two years with this, we can finally say that we're done and that Katawa Shoujo v1.2 is out now. To those who stayed and helped, this translation is for you. Thank you, and good bye.

Get the new release from the Katawa Shoujo website, or from these links:

Torrent: Windows | Mac OS X | Linux
DDL: Windows | Mac OS X | Linux

As always with our releases, 1.2 is a standalone replacement for previous KS releases and is the recommended version for new readers. For the people already done with the story, unless you're interested in the new language option or obsessed with minor language corrections, there's little need to get the new version. Naturally we and your hispanophone friends will certainly appreciate any help at seeding the torrents.

Kawasoft Artbook now available for download

The artbook that Kawa Soft produced for their release of the French translation of Katawa Shoujo is now available for download:

http://dl.katawa-shoujo.com/pr/artbooks/Kawasoft_Artbook.pdf

It features some artwork from the game as well as new original content. It's in French, but none of the text should pose much of a puzzle to figure out. So if you didn't manage to be in Paris in July, here's your chance. Thanks again to Kawa Soft for producing the translation and the artbook.

Summer Comiket event report

Hi from the Japanese translation team!

It's been some days after the summer Comiket. A warm thank you to everyone who came to our table, despite the extreme heat on that day. Both the new and the previous books sold well, thanks to the support from all of you. The stock of Tomorrow/Today books that we brought for the day even got sold out.

As for the surprise which we did not disclose until the day of the event, we had Raide, one of the 4LS devs and Lilly's artist, came and sit with us. He is on a trip to Japan and managed to drop by on the Comiket. This is the first occasion where a KS dev has personally sat at our booth. If in case you came by, you might have noticed him wearing a Kumamon cap in the back.

When we blundered and forgot to bring all the poster arts, Raide immediately saved the day by sketching up a number of drawings of KS heroines. Also for the first time we were able to respond to sketchbook requests. 5 out of 6 requests were of Hanako, showing her dominating popularity yet again.

We would like to thank Raide and another western fan who helped us, Lawls, for their support.

We saw many non-Japanese visitors coming to our booth, even more than in previous events. It may be that Comiket is becoming increasingly internationalized. We will hanging out again at Big Sight for Comitia 105 on August 18th. Please drop by if you didn't have the chance to come to Comiket.

Regarding the translation progress, our initial draft is complete and we are now in the reviewing phase. This is taking more effort than expected, and we do not have a clear view ahead as of now. We think it will take some time before we are able to report concrete progress.

We apologize for the long wait, and would like to ask for your patience.

Katawa Shoujo 1.1.1 patch (Mac OS X only)

The Mac OS X version of KS 1.1 has a bug where the game crashes on reaching the Act 1 bad end in French. This is a patch to fix it:

http://dl.katawa-shoujo.com/gold_1.1/[4ls]_katawa_shoujo_1.1.1_patch_[mac][E4951D8E].zip

Again, this patch ONLY applies to the OS X version of 1.1, it is not necessary for any other version (or if you do not intend to ever read it in French).

Katawa Shoujo 1.1 Released

After a year and a half, the first update to Katawa Shoujo is released! The occasion is brought upon by the completion of the French translation project. Give your monitor a high five to congratulate the hard-working translation team. We've also included some other, mostly minor upgrades to the game, such as typo corrections. 1.1 replaces the original release as the main distribution of KS so if you are distributing KS in any way, it'd be nice to swap to this version. Meanwhile, many other translation projects are still forging ahead and when completed, will be integrated into further updates to KS.

The main features of the 1.1 version are:
  • French localization
  • New version of the "Red Velvet" track, featuring luscious live saxophone tunes from our friend Japes
  • Engine upgrade to version 6.15 for OS X, allowing usage of Retina displays and fullscreen.
Get the new release from the Katawa Shoujo website, or directly from these links:
